Our offices are located in South Lake Union, a Seattle neighborhood that has become an entrepreneurial hotbed, attracting creative and tech companies from all over the region. We’re thrilled to have made the move to a more central location, opening up an exciting variety of more sustainable and active commuting options for our team.
That means less time in traffic and more time doing the things we’re passionate about. With bike storage and showers, we’ve got few excuses. And with the flagship REI store across the street, product research and recon is easier than ever. As if we needed more opportunities to geek out on new gear.
we are outside

We have a street address. But don’t let that fool you. Our passion plays on powder runs, single track and the glaciated peaks of the West. We come inside to share experiences, shape ideas and create stories around the active clients we serve.

It’s been that way from the beginning. Since 2005, we’ve cultivated a team of adventurists with an exclusive focus on adventure travel, outdoor sports. All are specialists in areas of marketing communication and together, we bring an uncommon level of passion and the best practices to our work. We engage with an in-depth knowledge of sports that unlocks brand insights and help us develop compelling campaigns designed to move consumers to purchase. Our response to “what did you do this weekend?” is answered in miles, vertical feet and personal bests. It’s not a contest. It’s just who we are.

Fred Hammerquist, our founder and business strategist, is a lifelong adventure junkie who balances his pursuits with the design and advertising business. Before starting the studio he spent 5 years as Executive Creative Director at DDB Seattle working on Holland America, The North Face, Seattle Supersonics and Columbia Crest wines. Fred has developed strategic and brand creative work for clients like The North Face, K2 Sports, Polartec, Canadian Mountain Holidays, Specialized, Sage & Taos Ski Valley.

Over the past few years Fred has competed in the Canadian Ironman, ridden the Tour of Flanders course, paddled the Sea of Cortez, run the New York Marathon, climbed Mt. Rainier round trip in 13 hours and hiked across the Basque land of Spain.

Dan Kostrzewski joined Hammerquist Studios as Creative & New Business Director after a five-year stint at Eddie Bauer, where he was Senior Content Editor, a role that included writing, guiding, capturing, and shaping the branded, athlete and social media content programs for the outdoor, active resurgence of the time-honored Washington brand. He is a storyteller at heart and has crafted more than a million words as an independent copywriter for a roster of core brands such as Arc’teryx, Burton, Cloudveil, First Ascent and Nau, while also logging a stint tracking pro athletes and harvesting in-depth feature stories for editorial publications such as Powder, Ski Journal, Transworld, Snowboard Canada and Coast Mountain Culture.

Dan is a proud Cascadian and lifelong member of the outdoor, active community. In his spare time, he enjoys fly-fishing enthusiastically around Puget Sound as well as hiking with his wife Katie and their beautiful three-year-old daughter Flora. He is a superfan of thick magazines with long feature articles and is constantly plotting his next trip to the Methow Valley. In the winter, you will find him at his adopted home-away-from-home of Mt. Baker when the conditions are firing.

Dave is a comprehensive brand strategist, with planning and research experience for clients like The North Face, Cascade Designs, Holland America Cruise Line, Kirkwood Ski Resort, K2 Skis, Polartec and SmartWool.

In addition to his strategic work, Dave now spends his time working for Outward Bound as a mountaineering instructor, for North Cascades Mountain Guides as a top rope slinger, and can be found sampling powder as often as possible at North Cascade Heli in the winters.

After freelancing at the studio on and off for the past few years, we finally convinced John to join us full time! For the past 3 years he has been the Creative Director for Ex Officio where he designed everything from major ad campaigns to consumer brand books, as well as developed and implemented a very successful brand strategy and visual identity. He has led design efforts for Cutter & Buck, The National Park Service, Sage Fly Fishing, Weatherby and Smartwool.

When John's not in front of his screen he spends time with his wife and daughter in West Seattle and shredding single track in the Cascades.

Peter joined the studio after 10 years with Outdoor Research, where he started on the loading doc and worked his way up to Web Operations Analyst. His years at OR gave him all the chops needed to join us as our Senior Developer.

In addition to hiking, backpacking and snowboarding, he also has a thing for bikes. He spent a few years frame-building and wrenching bikes while riding dozens of century rides – including STP in one day. But his true center is spending time with his wife and daughter.

Jordan earned his Web Design & Development degree at BYU. He also loves dabbling in photography, music and audio engineering. He was born and raised in Southern Idaho, which gave him years of experience snowboarding, climbing, camping, & fly fishing. When not crunching code at the studio he spends time with his wife and son.

Syd cut her teeth designing and producing retail catalogs for Nordstrom. Over the past seven years at Hammerquist she has kept us on time and on budget across a range of projects, from packaging to high-end collateral. As a marathoner, cyclist, skier, kayaker and backpacker, Syd maintains a high level of appreciation for the focus of the agency.

Alexis joined us as an Interactive Project Manager after an eight month backpacking trip pursuing her addiction with adventure travel. She traveled extensively through Patagonia, Spain and the South Pacific. Before that she spent 10 years with K2 Sports as a web developer and interactive project manager where she fell in love with the combination of creative and planning.

Of course part of the H Studios test was passed with her skills in skiing, trail running, hiking and surfing. When she's not out doing something active, you can likely find her sitting in the sun enjoying a margarita with her trusty dog Griffey (named after The Kid of course).

Monica spent the first nine years of her career cranking out magazines like People and CosmoGIRL while splitting her time between Sydney and NYC. She’s recently made the switch to a solid PNW lifestyle by moving to Seattle in order to spend more time near the mountains and to fill her weekends with camping, hiking and snowboarding. Despite her fresh roots in Seattle, she's a serial traveler with 35 countries and counting under her belt.

When she's not busy punching out InDesign chef-d'oeuvres, you'll most likely find her out house-hunting or rowing on Lake Union with her 8-person crew.

Brenda comes to us with a background in interactive program management and provides structure and support for the overall vision of client and agency efforts. The challenges of a new project keep her going - with a drive to understand each set of unique client business goals and strategic project needs.

Plus, the collaboration with the project team to drive the solution and the schedule is fun! (or so she says) Brenda chases her kids around on the slopes or the soccer field, beach or mountain.

Sean came to us after riding his motorcycle on a 14 month solo trip to Patagonia and back. The trip gave him time to think about switching his career path from his five years of clinical research to the outdoor industry. The Studio has offered him a blend of both, where he is working on project support and SEO/SEM/analytics strategy and management.

He is "perma-stoked" on the outdoors from growing up and playing in the mountains of Canada, the Rockies, and the PNW. Biggest addictions are rock climbing, mountain biking, and long-distance endurance motorcycling.

Jenna leads our digital/traditional media strategy and planning efforts. She brings her experience with Target, L.L.Bean, United Airlines & Hormel Foods combined with a love for everything outdoors. Jenna and her husband are currently immersed in alpine climbing instruction in the Washington Cascades and they've taken on many adventures including the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu and Zion National Park.
